| Link to Tradition
- Dancheong (丹靑) is the traditional Korean art of painting wooden buildings in many colours. The name itself is colour: dan, red, and cheong, blue-green. It protected the timber from weather and insects, and it showed the standing of the building it covered.
- Within it, meoricho is the pattern painted on the ends — the "heads" — of long timbers such as rafters. It was developed and formalised above all in Joseon, and is counted as the signature of Korean dancheong, rarely found in Chinese or Japanese work.
- At the heart of the meoricho blooms a lotus. A flower that rises clean out of mud, it stood for the integrity of the virtuous person, and as a pattern of good fortune it was painted on the important buildings of every palace, Gyeongbokgung and Deoksugung among them.
- This bookmark brings that flower, once seen only by looking up, into the book you open every day. For someone preparing for an exam or learning something new, it carries a wish: bloom clear, even on muddy days.
