| Link to Tradition
- The design comes from the imperial emblem of the Korean Empire: the plum blossom. Oyat is the old Korean word for plum, and the character for plum, 李 (Yi), was the family name of the Joseon kings, so the flower had long stood for the royal house. The Annals of King Taejo even likened Joseon to "a plum tree with deep roots and a sturdy trunk."
- The Korean Empire made it the national emblem, much as Japan used the chrysanthemum and European royal houses the lily. It marked palace buildings, imperial tableware and even coins as the sign of an independent state.
- Then the empire ended after fewer than thirteen years, and the plum blossom was forgotten with it. Of its four symbols, only the taegeukgi flag and the rose of Sharon carried on into the Republic of Korea.
- This bookmark brings that short-lived flower back out, into the book you open every day. For someone starting a new course of study or a new book, it carries a simple wish: keep going, like a tree with deep roots.
