| Link to Tradition
- The design comes from the rafter ends on the upper eaves of Geunjeongjeon at Gyeongbokgung Palace. Geunjeongjeon was the palace's principal hall, where Joseon kings were enthroned and received their court. It is built to look like two storeys, so its upper rafters can only be seen by tipping your head right back in the courtyard below.
- The pattern painted there is paryeonhwa meoricho. Paryeonhwa is a lotus in full bloom, swaying on the water; meoricho is the pattern painted on the ends — the “heads” — of long timbers such as rafters. A lotus rises clean out of mud, and so it stood for the integrity of the virtuous person.
- Dancheong protected the wood from insects and damp, but it was also a picture of gilsang — good fortune and prosperity. At the highest point of the hall where the king governed, the most splendid lotus carried a wish that the place would flourish for a long time.
- This mug brings that wish down from the rafters into a cup you hold every day. For someone starting a new job or setting up a new desk, it carries a simple hope: may the place you sit prosper for a long time.
