- In Korea, there was a tradition of exchanging fans during the Dano festival (around May) to ward off the summer heat and wish for good health. Kings would gift fans to their officials, who then passed them on to relatives and friends.
- Fans were not only functional for creating a breeze—they also carried symbolic meaning, believed to dispel negative energy, purify the surroundings, and invite good fortune. Scholars often painted poetry, calligraphy, or art onto fans as meaningful gifts or stylish personal items.
- In the 1980s, when fans were commonly used, mothers would visit the market before summer arrived to buy a fan for each member of the family.
- This traditional fan-making workshop, continues this legacy in Gurye, Jeollanam-do, beneath the ridges of Jirisan. For three generations, Seonjajang (master bamboo fan craftsman) Kim Ju-yong and his family have cultivated a 3,000-pyeong (nearly 10,000 square meters) bamboo forest and handcrafted fans with care, preserving both the technique and spirit of tradition—for those seeking the breeze of nature.
