| Link to Tradition

- Royal Court Paintings (Gungjung-hwa) were used to decorate folding screens, murals, and albums within the palace, enhancing the authority and dignity of the royal family. They followed strict formal rules and techniques, and were created by official court painters (Hwa-won) of the Royal Painting Bureau (Dohwaseo), reflecting the high artistic standards of their time.
- Minhwa, on the other hand, were folk paintings created for specific purposes in everyday life—such as weddings or 60th birthday celebrations. Often infused with wishes for good fortune, these works were painted by ordinary people and are celebrated for their freedom of expression, creativity, and unique, unstructured charm.
| | Unique Point
- These designs faithfully recreate the essence of traditional Korean royal court paintings and minhwa, while incorporating a modern aesthetic that feels timeless rather than outdated—offering a sense of classic beauty that suits contemporary tastes.

| Irworobongdo Standard/Wide (Sun and Moon, Five Peaks) |
<standard> <WIde>Irworobongdo is a royal court painting symbolizing the dignity and authority of the king, embodying the cosmic principles of Yin-Yang and the Five Elements. Traditionally displayed behind the king’s throne in the main and auxiliary halls of the palace, the sun represents the king, and the moon represents the queen. The painting also depicts Korea’s iconic mountains—Geumgangsan, Myohyangsan, Jirisan, Baekdusan, and Samgaksan—symbolizing the eternal prosperity of the nation. |
| Sipjangseangdo Wide (10 Symbols of Longevity) |
![]() Sipjangsaeng refers to the “Ten Symbols of Longevity,” representing ten creatures believed to live long lives. Traditionally, these paintings were created to wish for long life and good health. Koreans often gifted Sipjangsaengdo on special occasions such as birthdays and New Year’s to express their wishes for the recipient’s longevity. |
| Hwajodo Wide (Flowers and Butterflies) |
![]() Hwajodo depicts flowers, butterflies, insects, and animals harmoniously coexisting, expressing the Korean spirit of living in balance with nature. This painting celebrates the beauty of nature and embodies the origins of life. Symbols within the various flowers include the peony as a sign of wealth and honor, the lotus representing worldly truth and the virtues of a noble person, and the chrysanthemum symbolizing integrity and high moral standards. Hwajodo was commonly used as decorative art for bedroom wardrobes (anbang, gyubang, sarangbang) or as wedding decorations. |
| Hojakdo Standard (Tiger an Magpie) |
![]() Hojakdo is one of Korea’s representative folk paintings, born from the country’s mountainous landscape and rich cultural heritage, as diverse as the tiger legends themselves. Koreans regarded the tiger as the king of animals and a sacred creature symbolizing protection from evil spirits. Magpies, known as birds that bring good news, are believed in Korea to announce the arrival of welcome guests with their morning calls. |
| Morando Standard / Manmorando Standard (Peony) |
<Morando standard> <Manmorando standard>Known as the “king of flowers,” the peony was called Bugwidaeunghwang, symbolizing wealth and honor fit for royalty. Often depicted alongside scholar’s stones (suseok), it represents wishes for wealth, longevity, and happiness. |
| Yeonhwado Standard (Lotus Flower) |
![]() While Yeonhwado (Lotus Painting) is primarily associated with Buddhism, in Joseon folk paintings it symbolized the upright character of scholars and carried strong popular wishes for blessings and official success. When the lotus is depicted with a child (dongja), it signifies the hope for successive noble offspring. Including lotus seed pods (yeonbab) in the painting symbolizes wishes for many children and abundant happiness. |
| Woonyongdo Standard (Dragons) |
![]() The dragon, a prominent motif in Joseon folk paintings, symbolizes the highest authority and is revered as a guardian deity who brings abundant harvests and bountiful catches, reflecting both agricultural and maritime cultures. In Joseon folk art, the blue dragon wards off evil spirits; the yellow and white dragons represent the emperor; and the black and sea dragons are associated with rain-making rituals. Dragon paintings are believed to have the power to repel evil and bring good fortune, and they also symbolize the king, the core of royal power. |
| Bonghwangdo Standard (Phoenix) |
![]() The phoenix is a mythical bird believed to appear during times of peace and prosperity or upon the birth of a wise ruler. According to Korean proverbs—such as “the phoenix only perches on the paulownia tree” and “even when hungry, it does not peck at millet”—the phoenix symbolizes integrity, purity, and nobility. When depicted standing on land, the phoenix is often accompanied by peonies, symbolizing wealth and honor. |
